Mmmm for Mini

Ah crap, they did what I was hoping for, the new Mac Minis are out, one with a single Core at 1.5Ghz and a Core Duo at 1.67Ghz. Added Front Row, 2 more USB ports and I really can’t think of any reason why I wouldn’t want one, money permitting ofcourse.
It’s the perfect desktop, and it’d make me a perfect mini webserver.

Still, you’d have to buy it stock, because adding any options whatsoever and the iMac soon becomes a much better deal.

A hero desires a sword, and a sword desires truth.

Obligatory Soul Calibur III quote seeing as CommS and I spend the better part of the past 3 days playing it. Brilliant game, there’s so much to do and unlock. The only eep part is we played all that on his memory card, so I have a looooong way to go to catch up.
But first I have to catch to 3 days of being offline before the weekend is through. Happy happy joy joy, I first had to fix ElCapitan’s fuckup with the uploaded comic which b0rked the forum layout. So apologies to anyone who’s been looking at that going ‘eh?’ for the past couple of days.

I’ll leave you with a piccy of me with my new toy which arrived in the mail this saturday.
Replica of the Witch King's sword
Ah yeah, and the whole Demon internet thing is still a work in progress… I have to send the modem back (at last, woohoo, took them ‘only’ a week and a half to figure out it is broken, even though I already said so on day 1) but ofcourse the post office was closed extra early yesterday so that has to wait until tomorrow.

Open the floodgates

The windows exodus hath begun.

Dreams

This entry could be called: What I’m currently listening to / What has been my main musical companion while commuting this week / What best describes my mood / How I love Diary of Dreams.
So take your pick while I crank up the volume for ‘Haus der Stille’.

Bring on the bandwidth

Two connections are better than one, and seeing as my 5mb cable connection doesn’t allow me to run servers (and blocks several ports like the ones for mail to really prohibit it) I now have a second connection, 6mb ADSL. Which for some reason feels a heck of a lot faster than my cable, the only problem is that it croaks roughly every 4 hours. Already spent 2 hours on the phone with support today, still nothing. Weird doodoo, because the modem is still accessible by webconfig or telnet by both me and them, it just doesn’t pass any traffic along. So seeing as the only remedy is to switch the modem off and back on again I’m guessing the modem they sent me is kaputt. And so the wait begins.

Multitouch interface

Check out this demo.

While touch sensing is commonplace for single points of contact, multi-touch sensing enables a user to interact with a system with more than one finger at a time, as in chording and bi-manual operations. Such sensing devices are inherently also able to accommodate multiple users simultaneously, which is especially useful for larger interaction scenarios such as interactive walls and tabletops.

Sounds nice, looks WAY better. The demo features several applications which are quite novel, I particularly liked the demo interaction with the swirly stuff (imagine using that to create art) and the section where they make a collage of photos, dragging them back and forth and dynamically resizing them on the fly.

Which OS are you?

old…. but it’s past midnight and I’m still pondering about the consequences of switching to different forum software. SMF is looking interesting thusfar.
But I have no idea yet how much work it would be to convert the entire existing forum, update all my custome code on the site which uses the forum backend, not to mention make a decent layout for it…
Then again that’s going to be a problem no matter what we switch to, and after 5 years of using phpBB I’m afraid it’s about time to move on, 3.0 is looking as far away as it did a few years ago. I’m sure it’ll be fantastic once it does get released, I just don’t think I’ll want to wait another few years for that to happen.

You are Amiga OS. Ahead of your time. You keep a lot of balls in the air. If only your parents had given you more opportunities to suceed.
Which OS are you?

Random bits

Today’s random bits which are of interest to me;

First up is one of the best examples of ajax put to good use, AjaxAMP. It’s a plugin for my favourite music player, Winamp. When activated you get a full winamp interface running in your browser, playlist, drag and drop and everything else included. It’s fun to play with and useful too. (we use it at work to listen to internet radio and not having to bother eachother every time to switch channel or change the volume whenever someone needs to make a call). Version 2.0 has just been released with several bugfixes and support for the media library.

Today’s fun with Apple link is someone who built his own mini server network using 3 Mini’s. It looks damn sjweet to say the least (although I think I’d hang them against the wall, mmm) but the way he set it up is also excellent.

New webservice of the day is cocomment. It’s flashy, it’s beta version, it’s invite only, so you know it’s Web 2.0 (le hype). But unlike the dozens of other new services each day this one actually makes sense, to me anyway. Seeing as I leave comments on quite a few sites and blogs all over the place it’s hard to keep track of everything, especially seeing as a lot of blogs don’t use a subscribe to comments feature so you at least get a mail when there’s a reply. And that’s exactly what cocomment adresses; keeping track of comments and conversations and letting you know when there have been updates.
Unfortunately I can’t make a comment (no pun intended) about the actual working of the service seeing as I don’t have an invite. Le sigh.

The last bit of news could be simply summarized as ‘drool‘.
Either that or ‘look out OsX, here we come’, in terms of fancy desktop graphics on the linux desktop anyway. Check out some of the videos at that link. Go Novell!

Best searchengine in town

Try boogybox.com. or upgrademywife.com. Say what? Yup, they’re owned by the G-company. Odd shit neh?

Work in progress... not home!
Trying to get all/most of the new code working before I start on the eyecandy.
