You give me a time and a place, I give you a five minute window. Anything happens in that five minutes and I’m yours. No matter what. Anything happens a minute either side of that and you’re on your own. Do you understand?

What a surprising movie. Not knowing anything about it other than having seen the trailer I was expecting the typical hollywood treatment, overkill effects, non-stop action and over the top dialogue.
Instead I saw a, for lack of better words, minimalistic and restrained movie focused on telling a story and conveying emotions and a mood. Right from the start it grabs you and doesn’t let go until the end titles start rolling.
Dialogue is kept to a minimum, no bold crap, no action sequences that don’t serve a purpose (although there’s plenty of action), it all just worked and shows that great movies can still be made.
If you haven’t seen it yet; go watch it.

WordPress app 3.0 for iPad

Every time they release a new version I take a look to see what’s improved.
And every time I take a look I wonder why I’d use it.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s free, reasonably quick and quite actively updated. I just don’t see the point of it when I can just use Safari for the familiar WordPress Dashboard where everything works exactly the way I’m used to. It’s also bloody fast on Safari.
Compare that to the screenshots of the app version and I just wonder about some UI choices that seem like a minimalistic text editor. Or why the stats are confined to a small bar on the side leaving most of the screen quite literally completely empty.
Oh well, I’ll look again when 4.0 is released.

Fighting comment spam

As I mentioned before, I’m being hit by comment spam at a rate of hundreds a day. Akismet flags them as spam thank god, but I’d still prefer them not to even get recorded to begin with.
It seems automated and hitting older posts, so in an attempt to stop the tide I’ve disabled comments on posts older than 90 days. Unfortunately WordPress disregards its own settings when it comes to attachment pages, for this I had to sneak into wp-includes/comment.php and modify 2 lines.
In my current version (3.3.2) it’s lines 1963 & 2002, where I changed
$post_types = apply_filters( 'close_comments_for_post_types', array( 'post' ) );
$post_types = apply_filters( 'close_comments_for_post_types', array( 'post', 'attachment' ) );
Fingers crossed.

Avengers GUI & HUD

Awesome post by the design lead for the Avengers movie’s GUI’s and HUD’s used.
Gotta love the attention to detail in all those stills.

Football with the kids

A lazy summer Sunday in the park.

When life gives you lemons…

Fuck lemons.

DayZ is the first game in a very long time that makes me wish I had a new Mac/PC to run it on.
It’s a concept mod for a game, but a concept that is proving so damn popular that it’s now getting more and more support. Not bad for an alfa mod.
These 2 articles were where I first heard of the game, and they really set the tone:
DayZ – Part One
DayZ – Part Two

In a nutshell, you land on a beach with some minimal kit, and you must survive. Survive fellow players roaming the land trying to kill you, survive zombies, and survive period. And when you die you lose everything and have to restart from scratch back on the beach. Now that adds pressure.

Job application pro tip

When you copy/paste job application mails, make sure to edit the title of the job before hitting send.
As was pointed out to me yesterday during a job interview… luckily they had a sense of humor about it and actually called me a few hours later saying I’m through to round 2 which consists of only me and another guy.
Fingers crossed.

Whoops x3

1. Whoops, a whole month gone by without any posts. My bad. Not that it matters because,
2. Whoops, the site was down for pretty much the entire past week without me or anyone else noticing. It was due to a corrupt db as this server is getting older and older and crashes more often. Upon fixing it I was greeted with the above screen…
3. Whoops, nearly 15000 spam comments in just a week or two?! To put it into context, Akismet has stopped about 114000 spam comments in the past 6 or so years that I’ve been using it. So 15000 is absurd much.

Work in progress... not home!
Trying to get all/most of the new code working before I start on the eyecandy.
