Job Hunt Fail
The other day i hit the streets of liverpool and tried to bomb as many places of work with a copy of my CV, however, this proved somewhat annoying as most places gave me the polite version of “FUCK OFF” but the biggest let down was at this milkshake store.
The woman working there refuced to take my CV on the grounds I don’t look Unnaccetable, she told he to cut my hair, stand tall and wear a suit.
Now this makes me laugh, because if my hair IS short, its no longer at my shoulders and I only got my hair cut the other week, but I was getting told this by a woman who had tattoo’s all the way up her arm’s full of dragons and naked men with swords, so I pretty much got the feeling she was taking a free jib at me. God I hate people who feel the fact there better than I just because they’re “alternative”!

Put it this way – you wouldn’t enjoy working with her so all the better =P That said, for some reason people in catering get iffy about lads with long hair or facial hair because of the food I suppose. Beards I can understand, because it’s difficult to hairnet a beard (Invent the beartnet. You’ll make millions! ) but it’s not like they make girls cut their hair short.
And wearing a suit to hand out CVs… what?
The students will be out in force around about now so shop jobs might be saturated with them. If there’s nothing in the industrial estates (parcel dispatch is what I’m doing at the moment) then have you tried a temping agency? You’ll have to pay a cut out of your wages for their commission, but you should be getting paid more than minimum wage anyway.
That you don’t look unacceptable? I wonder what she’s looking for, then…
On a serious note, though, while wearing a suit into a milkshake shop is fucking retarded…any type of foodservice is going to be anal retentive about stuff like that. Your hair might be short to you, but it might not be to her, and it might not be easily contained in a hat or net. Women aren’t typically asked to cut their hair [and yes this is sexist!] because in general they do more to keep it tamed and out of the way; and it’s easier to put shoulder-length hair up than it is to put chin-length up.
Her expectations are unreasonable, and her attitude was out of hand, but you also need to take these things into consideration. And yes, the tattoos might not look “acceptable,” but ink isn’t going to fall into someone’s shake.
A bit of advice I’ve heard is the whole, “Dress for the job you want, not for the job you have/are applying for.” You’re more likely to get considered that way–and at the very least, don’t slouch. x] If you were, she was right about posture.
Helixy, Indeed about the hair and stuff. but about the posture, my postures fine as I dont slouch anymore, thing is, im a short guy in general ><
Glad other people are dealing with this bullsh*t economy in good spirits too! That’d make me mad as heck but at least she was honest with you. Better that she not take your resume then bs you by taking your resume and filing it away in the trash…
