Whaaaa?

Ok, so the estate agents need to profit and to do that, they need what, £50-100 per sale/let?

Admin and lease charge: ~£200

Credit check charge: ~£70.50

I can check my credit rating for free (albeit one time only before I’d get charged for it, but y’know) and considering I’d have only been able to have any kind of debt from 16 and I’m 19 now, I think £70.50 is a bit of a rip.

Although, I suppose that’s £35.25 each. But I still consider that a rip. Bah.

It’s the holding fee that gets me. £200 of that total is refundable… once you have the property.

Now, the first rent, deposit, admin charge, credit check and lease fee all have to be paid before the credit check. The credit check doesn’t automatically fail us, but is given to the landlord/lady who may then say “I don’t like the look of these first timers” and then… what happens to that £200?

In addition, how long does that take and what happens to us if they say no and leave us with 1 week before uni starts?

And, as a random little thing, in the past 10 minutes I’ve had 3 emails pop up from 3 people I don’t know trying to sell me “free” laptops and singles websites. And I have no idea who from.

Let this be a lesson to all of you. Never think online surveys will ever actually pay out, and assume they’re lying when they say “we don’t give out your details” because a year later, BAM!  (”hey, a £5 here and there would help, right? GYAH my inbox O.O”)
