“Settlers III was also famous for it’s peculiar copy protection: in pirated versions of the game, iron smelters would only produce pigs instead of iron, which made the player unable to produce weaponry”

Mahaha. Who needs Securom? =P
Srsly though. It only punishes the pirates and, chances are, a couple of levels in. Shame nowadays it’s probably easy to get around. None of this “you can only install so many times” bollocks. Plus a sense of humour.
I’ve just finished Legend of Kyrandia (Adventure game with semi- monkey island style humour, but a few instances of SSDS (sierra’s sudden death syndrome), but usually with fair warning ) and was looking for other oldie games that I used to own.
Speaking of SSDS, some people have compiled “All the ways you can die” videos for Sierra’s Kings Quest games. I find these highly amusing, but recall the annoying penultimate level in KQ7 where the boogieman just jumps out of thin air and grabs you - instakill, and as far as I recall based entirely on luck.
And in the earliest Kings Quests, instead of AI pathfinding you had to do it for them, and neglecting to do so (or being a couple of pixels out) meant walking directly off a cliff. Spiral Stairs in KQ4 anyone?

Wow, I never heard that about Settlers III. Quite funny.
I’m afraid I only ever played the first KQ. In monochrome.
