Webcomicy goodness
I read far too many of these, but some of them are amazing.
http://hanna.aftertorque.com/ Hanna is not a Boy’s name – an excellent, present setting comic with a quirky style in which a zombie narrates the action surrounding himself, hyperactive paranormal investigator Hanna, and client Conrad (and more, but that would be spoilers.)
www.meekcomic.com The Meek – another excellently drawn comic, and the writer/artist seems like a very pleasant person too. She responds to everything politely and links to other webcomics (gasp! competition!) every week or so. It’s not work safe for the first chapter – it’s not porn, and it’s certainly not detailing any parts you wouldn’t see on national geographic, but it’s not like people in the jungle wilderness wear much clothes, right?
http://goblins.keenspot.com/ Goblins – I don’t even like D+D but I find this amusing. It’s easy to follow if you have a vague grasp on the kind of rules it has (like i know you generally have ‘charisma, strength, wisdom, etc” stats) or have played MMORPGs since it points and laughs at the things other players often do. The art style takes a bit of getting used to but I think if it were gorgeous soft shading it wouldn’t pack such a laugh at time.
Also, Goblins is the home of “I DECLARE MY DODGE ON YOU!” after the first ‘arc’ of story (apparently, in D+D you need to declare you have the ability to dodge every round for it to be taken into account… apparently, the author is somewhat sick of it being declared every round.)
Speaking of soft shading, http://requiem.seraph-inn.com/ The Phoenix Requiem has some nice soft shading and updates very frequently indeed. It’s set in Victorian-eske times (if you’re not a swords and sorcery fan) and manages a deep, if cushy, romance that seems to be difficult to pull off in a comic. It tends to dominate the webcomic award nominations, so some people despise it, and while the main heroine might be a bit goody-two-shoes, and the pair are verging on Mary-Sueishness, it feels like like a chocolate gateux, as opposed to some sickly sticky flat souffle of character development and romance you get in some writing.
I’d link to Dreamless, which is painted by the same artist as Phoenix Requiem, but written and posted by Billy Crosby. But I’m having a sulk at it right now since I’ve been banned from commenting. Ha.
(I told the author he sounds like a tit for being so defensive over his comic. In a more tactful way, of course; that if he explained that yes, he did do research and contrary to popular belief, people from x country in x era dressed like this according to his research from (source), it wouldn’t make him look as bad as if he goes “ZOMG, YOU haven’t done the research, STUPID” to the people pointing out possible historical inaccuracies.
I mean, I’m all behind screaming at webcomic trolls going “ZOMG your update is late!” when the reason is on the main page somewhere, or it’s something important like, I don’t know, your mum died. But for everything else, it’s possible to reign in one’s rage.
…Yes, I did make this entire blogpost to rant about that. I must grow a thicker e-skin. E-People being mean on the internetz really gets my goat. I feel better now. )
