One of my favorite movies is Amelie. I’m just going to put it out there right now and say that, because it becomes pertinent to this post, mostly because of the depiction of the subway/train. It’s so hot, it’s all like, whooosh whoosh and like pew pew vroooooom. Maybe I’m doing a bad job explaining it here, but suffice it to say I liked the scenes a lot, among the others, heh.
Buses, taxis, airplanes, cars, they just don’t seem to compare to the subway experience. I mean, it’s like the transportation of the FUTURE, NOW! It’s crazy every time I think about it. I mean, you’re in a metal tube, underground, and you’re rushing along, and the sound and the darkness and it’s like you’re in some like speedy tube..of the future, and in space.
Ha, this isn’t coming out well. Alright, think of Futurama, and they’re all like, ding ding, ding dong dong, and they have the people in their transportubes (that term needs some rethinking, needs pizzazz!) and then the spaceship crashes into the big TV screen. It’s like those transporter tubes! A subway! Oh god, I can’t even describe it. But it’s so amazing. I mean cars and buses and taxis just lose immediately because of so much, the fact that you can see stuff, there’s stuff distracting you and for all the speed and sound of an automobile engine the stuff outside the window is grounding you in reality. I dunno, I guess it might be different if you have a really really nice sports car, but I guess ultimately it’s just that a subway lets your imagination run free. There’s no base in reality, just you in a surreal metal tube with strangers rushing on in great tumult, clattering around corners and flying through the darkness towards the future.
