So this one’s a little off-topic. But I feel I need to put something up..by uh…popular request. Of one person. Zlolzt.
I don’t know how many of you watched The Departed yet. I haven’t, but I really should, because I loved Infernal Affairs. Me and like 2 billion people. Of course, Hollywood had to cleverly go and snatch it up and remake it. I browsed iMDb’s boards on it a little, and I definitely got the sense that it got some fundamental spin to it, but I can only conjecture uncomfortably about what its begun. I also know that “My Sassy Girl” has also undergone reproduction in the US, but I can’t remember with who and the stuff. So yeah…that ought to be the whole same experience when it hits.
But the point is that the other day, when I was waiting in line to get a ticket for Jackass 2 with my friends, I heard this girl nearby talking about how amazing it was to this friend she was with, and describing the plot line. I was like, oh shit, that’s…wait, that’s Infernal Affairs. Wtf? And I got a little pissed. Am I the only one that gets frustrated when I realize I know something, that someone else doesn’t, but most of all, that there seems to be no way of telling this person about their ignorance without coming across as an arrogant asshole trying to simultaneously preen and bask in their own brilliance at the cost of someone else’s dignity? Except really that person doesn’t seem so stupid compared to the asshole busy making a dick of himself. Um…a dick asshole. I have a bad vocabulary for an 800 Verbal. But another point I want to hit on is that it’s also really frustrating to see all this credit go where it doesn’t really deserve to be. The one thing that remains true is that The Departed still strongly follows the storyline of Infernal Affairs, and that really, all this ingenuity is being attributed to some anonymous faceless writer in Hollywood when something really brilliant finally comes out of the normally rather so-so Asian cinema. I guess it’s just frustrating given my devotion to HK/Asian film, heh. :\
That said, everyone remember Return of the Jedi? Hehe…I hated the fish thing co-pilot Lando had. I kept thinking the guy would fit in more wrapped in seaweed and rice than in the freaking universe….ugh. Not that I think I’d enjoy eating fish man sushi.

It gets even worse over time. Game reviews… it annoys the #$% out of me to hear some snot nose ranting in a review about how awesome and original a game is when I KNOW it’s just a ripoff (more popularly called a remake these days). And yes, movies too, and the endless stream of songs that are covers, or have ripped samples/melody lines.

wow, i forgot that Infernal Affairs was being remade. I actually saw The Departed this evening. Good movie, mostly because it takes place in Boston
But now that you’ve reminded me that it’s the remake of Infernal Affairs, it took it down a few notches.
and stupid people are stupid.
oh, and hooray for reading material!
