The one problem with WordPress MU is that even though it’s billed as the stuff that drives that’s a bit of a stretch. Think more of it as the engine. But an engine alone doesn’t make a car. And so the MU users are left to scratch their chin and come up with their own solutions. Which is cool for those who are pros and/or run MU for commercial sites, but it has left us hobbyists a bit in the dark.
Enter BuddyPress.

BuddyPress will completely transform a vanilla installation of WordPress MU into a fully functional social network platform.

Yippee-kah-yeah motherfuckers. Very awesome news. Check his site for how things came to be, a big yay for Andy.

Signal vs noise

Started a blog
How do you find interesting sites in a web where 99.9% is tripe from newbies or spammers.
I recently joined a blogger network. Blogs really are the Geocities of today for anyone familiar with how things worked a dozen years ago. The problem is blogspam, the amount of people that blog for money, who think they can earn a quick buck by copypasta-ing stuff from all over the web and posting it as original ‘content’. Even on BlogCatalog this much is obvious, and the amount of noise drowns out the signal, because who really has the time and energy to look for a gem in a pile of, well… dung. An invite only network sounds nice, just for like minded people who do their thing and enjoy the old spirit of the web. That could be a way to build a stronger signal.

Speed linking

Here’s something interesting that’s worth a try. Getting links to your site is good and improves your ranking. So how do you get more links fast? Simple;
– Copy the links below into a new post (make sure you have the visual text editor turned on in your profile so you can paste them as links instead of text)
– Add a link to your own site
– Write a bit about the joys of speed linking or as it’s also called viral linking, and publish.
As I get pinged by your site I’ll update the list and add you to the current list and so everyone gets a boatload of free and good backlinks.
In addition to that you can also leave a comment here just to make extra sure I won’t miss the ping.

BlogDay 2007

BlogDay 2007

BlogDay was created with the belief that bloggers should have one day dedicated to getting to know other bloggers from other countries and areas of interest. On that day Bloggers will recommend other blogs to their blog visitors.

It’s coming up on August 31st, so click on the banner and check it out.
I like the concept of everyone recommending 5 blogs from a different culture and point of view on that day.

The stream

My pet project, finally completed, one less to do.
What is it? Well, social networking sites are fun, but they have one very big flaw in my opinion. You have 0 control over the content. Try finding something you dug on, try accessing your bookmarks when is down, and you’ll see what I mean. My solution: WordPress.

Do you Twitter?

I’m now twittering, I’m a twitterer. Click on the image to see my twitter.

twit·ter /ˈtwɪtər/ [twit-er]
–verb (used without object)
1. to utter a succession of small, tremulous sounds, as a bird.
2. to talk lightly and rapidly, esp. of trivial matters; chatter.
3. to titter; giggle.
4. to tremble with excitement or the like; be in a flutter.

Eh, ok… I’m not sure if any of that applies to me but it’s good for shits and giggles. Quick summary; register and connect with your friends and post small blurbs about what you’re doing or what you’re thinking about. Your friends can see your (and everyone else of their friends) replies and react where appropriately, and whee, we have another social network. So it’s like a mass internet messenger. You can even use your phone or instant messenger to post, but thusfar the only supported im seems to be Gchat, although they do also offer a few stand alone programs for your braindumps.
What I also like about it is that it’s fully RSS enabled, so I could easily grab a feed and have it updated in one of the sidebars here on the site or forum.

Social bookmarks

Fashionably late as always I took a peek at my todo list from hell and decided to turn my attention to social bookmarks. Hip and trendy last year, common and in broad use today. I’ve been meaning to add a plugin for a while but I was never sure if people would really use it. So what is social bookmarking? You know how you bookmark a site in Firefox, or add a favourite in Internet Explorer? Well, same thing, only instead of adding it to your browser you add it to a site. Most notable of these is, the grandaddy of social bookmarking sites. The advantage of this is that you can access your bookmarks no matter where you are. It’s also fun because you get to see who else has bookmarked the same things as you, and check out their other bookmarks as they might be of interest to you.

phpBB3 Release Candidate 2 (RC2) released

Of course… a day after I start fiddling with the code and layout. Go figure. Anyway, yay for the new version which might be the final release candidate if all goes well.

Work in progress... not home!
Trying to get all/most of the new code working before I start on the eyecandy.
