The sun is starting to shine, life is good.
Got my contract renewed and a nice raise, so for the next year and a half at least I’m going to stay on as a sysadmin.
Then again I have a job interview as webdeveloper tomorrow which should be interesting. I only replied on their online job application thingie with a link to the site here and got a mail and call from their managing director, so I’m guessing they liked the site.
After work I’ll be picking up this beauty here on the side, woohoo. Finally an Apple again. This lovely machine is the missing ingredient for a lot of new things that will be started over the next months. It’s going to be the webserver which will host my new sites on a dedicated ADSL line. After I’ve added some RAM and stuff first ofcourse, the poor thing only has 384MB at the moment. It’s a G4@733Mhz Quicksilver for anyone interested in that sort of thing.
The only less than cool thing is a major car repair coming up next wednesday which is going to eat a lot of money… as usual. ¬.¬
Ah well, it can’t all be good news.

More RAM is better of course, but my not-so-poor eMac also has 384MB of RAM and in can cope nicely with what I’m doing so far.
On the other hand: I wouldn’t choose a Mac as a webserver in the first place, but for desktop-usage! But then, I’m not familiar with your computer-park… ;-)
My home park runs mainly on XP & Suse at the moment, with a bit of Ubuntu now and again for shits ‘n giggles and an old RaQ I still have to install Debian on one day. I know it may seem as an odd choice but I’m already fiddling around with Linux at work on a daily basis and while it works… I don’t want to even begin thinking about how long I’d be editing text files before I have a multidomain setup with web/mail/ftp/ssh/the kitchensink for each domain AND properly secured. Can it be done? Ofcourse. But I know I can get it done soooo much simpler and faster on the Mac even though all the underlying daemons/apps are the same as on ‘nix.
And yes, eventually I’m going to get one as desktop as well, but my first priority is my own dedicated server.
As for the memory, dunno, different usage I guess. When I had one last year to see if I liked it I was running it as desktop and even then I found that 512MB was the sweet spot for RAM. Less works, but that’s the point were you still notice things run smoother.
Then again I always run a lot of apps simultaneously, even my main XP desktop has 2GB of RAM of which half is in use.
Am I right to say you are going to install Mac OS X SERVER, or… something else (like a toolkit I’m not aware of yet) on the Mac?
Just apps on top of Tiger, not the server version. But standard you already have Apache, php, MySQL, postfix, ftpd. All they need to make life easy is some apps to manage them. Like ‘postfix enabler’ & ‘ftpd manager’ for example.
It’s been a year since I last fiddled with it so I’ll have to refresh my list, but I’ve never had it this easy setting up a ‘nix webserver with all the other services. Hence my choice to go that route again.
OS X can be a memory hog over time and 512 will only make OSX “content”. Then again i’m trying to deal with large images using 512 on my Mini and it just does’t cut it. You, on the other hand, or using it for web related stuff and i’m not sure how OSX will react, maybe 512 will be enough.
Better safe than sorry, I’ve already bumped it to 768 at the moment, just finished installing Tiger. I’m now checking out the best way to go about getting MySQL/php5/Apache2 up and running.

Yups, but that’s meant as development environment only, it’s not secured in any way. Which is why they say you shouldn’t use it for a live environment.
