Random bits

Written on Dec 20, 2005 // Random.

Wordpress 2.0 due to be released this week, looking forward to play around with that quite a bit, especially after reading about all the new stuff that’s supposed to be in there. Along with that K2 should hit 1.0, so as soon as the plugins are confirmed as being compatible or are updated I can continue work on this layout.

Apple’s Xserve: MIA or DOA in the Enterprise? This one continues to puzzle me as well, seeing as the Xserves are pretty cheap compared to other servers, and they make me go mmm every time I see one. Maybe the userbase is part of the problem. In general Apple users tend to be non-techies, who won’t exactly be introducing Xserves into a corporate environment.
Meanwhile the countdown to January continues and rumours continue to spread about whether or not Apple will start pushing Intel systems in January already or not, what chip they’ll use and which product line will be the first to go Intel.

The trailer for The Da Vinci Code is released, the trailer does look nice, despite my Tom Hanks allergy. Hmm, maybe I’ll finally read the book, I’m usually a bit hesitant about books like this which are embraced by the general public. But you never know, it could actually be good.

And speaking of good…. if you haven’t seen the new Battlestar Galactica yet, get it… NOW. If you’re even halfway interested in sci-fi and have an IQ with 3 digits this is one series you don’t want to miss. It’s so brilliant I’m even tempted to write my first review ever just to express how much I love it.
The only downside is having to wait until January for the next episode, damn what a cliffhanger.

I read an article a while ago about the XServe. The article studied the server on how it performed under medium to large stresses, and apparently, it didn’t perform all to well when compared to other proffesional servers out there. I think this was mainly to do OSX and partially the processor. Apple could be waiting for the new Intel chips before they once again roll out another series of XServes.

True, I read a similar article at Anandtech were the Xserve was beaten to a bloody pulp compared to other systems when it came to handle MySQL connection. Iirc their conclusion was that is was due to the micro kernel at the base of OsX, which would mean that even with an Intel based OsX system it would still perform bad in that area.
On the other hand, one of the things that appeal to me in particular is the range of software you get with the Xserve, which contains many of the most popular packages out there but tied in (supposedly) into a luvely admin interface with the usual Apple goodness. Which, as any who’s ever used PostfixEnabler makes turning a Mac into a server a total joy and dead easy in comparison with many linux distributions.

heh, I considered writing a Battlestar Galactica review in my blog :P
but then, I realized I had too much to write about, and most people here would watch it anyways :D

You should try reading the book(s), I’ve read both Angels & Demons and Da Vinci Code, and I very much enjoyed them.
The books feature a whole lot of information about history, without taking out the pace of the story… That alone is an accomplishment worth reading (but hey, I just love reading about history ^_^; ).

Saint: Go ahead and write it anyway, everyone must watch it!
Lori: that’s one of the main reasons I’d read it too. Gotta love the history and conspiracy theories. ;)
