Firefox 3

Firefox getting a bit sluggish for you? Try switching to beta 5 of Firefox 3.
It’s got a lot of new features, none of which I tried yet, but… and it’s a big but, it’s faster. No really faster, a lot faster. I keep dozens of tabs open all the time and all of a sudden switching between them is fast again, real snappy. And page refreshes feel a lot faster too. And it uses a lot less memory as well.

Edit:
- If you need Java support (like for our company’s ERP system), stay away from it.
- Need a working Del.icio.us plugin for Firefox 3? Get it here.

  1. I would try it, but since it is still in beta, all my plugins won’t work. ]: I’m kinda anal retentive about them.

  2. What’s the issue with the Java support? Is it just because it’s beta?

  3. I tried the linux version of 3 a few months ago. It’s pretty poor really. I went back to the 2.x thing (iceweasel) that comes with my OS after a couple of days fighting with it.
Java worked after a fashion, After the usual bollocks with the manual install and the confusion over which libjava.so version to link. But the flashplayer (which doesn’t work properly on my hardware.. it doesn’t like my soundcard) refused to run at all. No matter what I did with it there was no chance. Most of the rest of the plugins could be made to work with some jiggery pokery and compiling from source (change FF version etc) against the new version libs.. Not very user friendly, but possible. I wish somebody would start a campaign to have flash media banned (or declared non standard) from the internet… There are much better ways to stream media in an iframe these days without using this horrid proprietary closed non-free monster. I gave up with the useless thing, and now open swf streams with a vlc plugin instead.
How many people know how to do that tho??

    FF3… work needed.

  4. Travis: Yeah, that plus it could actually be our ERP being a bit too picky.
Jan: I’m on XP so that explains a few things. And maybe the older beta you used was a lot wobblier?
I do agree with the ban Flash campaign, it’s so rarely used for what it was intended for.

Work in progress... not home!
Trying to get all/most of the new code working before I start on the eyecandy.
