Metisse

Written on Feb 19, 2007 // Linux.

Mandriva Linux Metisse Project
The current big thing in linux land is Beryl, offering a luvly 3D desktop experience vaguely similar to but way sjweeter than Os X.
But now there seems to be a new kid on the block in the form of Mandriva’s Metisse. After seeing the demo vids I’m definitely going to give their LiveCD a go next week or so. It’s way beyond anything Beryl can do at the moment, if not as polished. Interesting times.

How resource intensive is it? How does it compare to windows vista?

I haven’t tried Matisse yet, but if it’s anything compared to Beryl it’ll run peachy on even 5 year old graphics cards. So you get a much bigger bang for your buck in terms of hardware compared to Vista, which is sluggish on everything but the latest generation cards.

From what I’ve read… Metisse should run better on older gfx-cards then Beryl/Compiz does.
Could be, dunno myself, that Metisse is actually 2D accelerated instead of 3D, which is easier to find on even older gfx-cards.

I believe that Metisse is GPL’ed (or somesuch license mumbo-jumbo) and could become available in other distro’s aswell.
Hopefully stuff from Metisse finds it’s way into Beryl *crosses fingers*

Hmm, that’s good news for me because my new server only has a Matrox Millennium. This could give me some eyecandy after all then, because Beryl doesn’t work on it.
    *crosses fingers as well*

Since when are you into Linux?

I’m reading up a lot on linux, and specifically Ubuntu.
And that’s about a month now. Installed Ubuntu on my laptop - and really liked it.

I’m currently in the somewhat difficult process of installing Ubuntu on my desktop/file-server.
If I didn’t game anymore, I’d even ditch Windows completely *grin*.

Anyhoos, I just wanted to try Linux again and I really like the way Ubuntu handles packages (I know, yay for Debian).
Finding out there was something like Beryl, completely made me boo at Vista.

Sjweet, Feisty or older? I’m currently toying with Feisty on the new machine, and if all works I’m switching my main desktop over as well.
There are a lot of ways to get your windows games to work under linux as well these days…

I’m using Edgy. I take it upgrading to Feisty won’t be that hard.
Allthough, considering how close we are to april.. The latest herd should be stable, I assume.
Anyways, I know of Cedega and the likes. But in the end, Windows games play best on Windows ;-)

I’m betting on things like Xen and VirtualBox to fulfill my needs in that area.
As for the upgrade… keep your fingers crossed, I’m not sure it’ll be that easy. A few core mechanisms have changed quite fundamentally, the first upgrade tests went tits up. And Drake>Edgy wasn’t exactly smooth sailing either.

Thanks for the info on the upgrades!
I assume upgrading from ‘Herd to herd’ and ‘Herd to 7.04′ is going to be less bumpy/possible?

Anyways, luckily I haven’t installed Edgy yet (FakeRAID sucks) and will download and install herd-4 tonight (hopefully on a 3Ware hardware raid controller).

Yeah, the herdes are just milestones within the update cycle. So you don’t even have to do anything to go from herd 3 to 4 for example, and when the final gets released you only have to edit the repositories.
Good luck with the hardware raid!

The hardware raid works superb. And Feisty’s herd4 works too (not on my laptop though).
Would like some quick advice though: Use LVM or not?

It can be handy if you want to expand volumes later by adding drives to the LVM.
