So WordPress’ Matt extends a hand of friendship to allow other blogging systems to use his wonderful Akismet.
Awesome. I love Akismet.
So why am I not allowed to use Akismet on my WordPress MU installation here on the site even though I’m not an enterprise and I’m only running it for a couple of friends? I’d have to buy a $150 a month enterprise key.
Riiight, like I can afford that.

Check the ‘not allowed’ link, you’re not allowed to use the personal license on an MU installation.
If you’re using a personal license for a personal use, the software doesn’t really matter. Most uses of MU aren’t personal, but that doesn’t mean people using MU are prohibited from using Akismet.
That’s great to hear, last time I enquired about that on the MU forums I nearly had my head chewed off, and seeing as it’s also mentioned in the faq I assumed it’s a no-no.
